BLOCK OF THE MONTH

DECEMBER: THE SAW TOOTH STAR

A simple and very striking star block best made with 2 contrasting colours. Vary the patterns in each colour to add texture and detail. Create stars in multiple colours to create a larger pattern across a whole quilt-top.

Note: When your pieces are ready to be sewn together, make sure to trim them all to the same size to ensure they fit together correctly.

1. ORGANISE AND CUT THE FABRIC YOU'LL NEED

Cut eight 4” squares of colour A, and eight 4” squares of colour B.

2. CREATE HALF-SQUARE TRIANGLE BLOCKS

Assemble 8 HST blocks using 4 squares of each colour.

Mark a diagonal line across each pair, and stitch either side of the line.
Cut down the original line and press to create 8 HST blocks.

Make sure to trim all blocks to the same size.

3. LAY OUT THE DESIGN

Arrange your squares to form the pattern, using the illustration as a guide. This helps to make sure your squares are all facing in the right direction.

You could take a photo on your phone to refer back to as you sew.

4. JOIN INTO ROWS

Sew the squares together, row by row, pressing the seams in row 1 to the left, row 2 to the right, row 3 to the left, and finally row 4 to the right.

5. SEW INTO THE FINISHED BLOCK

Sew all 4 rows together to complete your star.
